Tour Details

Dive into the rich culture of Buenos Aires as you travel to Mataderos and San Telmo. Tour the numerous markets and cultural streets of these neighborhoods for a truly Argentinian experience.

After meeting your guide, you will head to the San Telmo neighborhood, or barrio, on the outskirts of Buenos Aires. San Telmo is the oldest barrio in Buenos Aires, and it is well preserved. Artists and dancers line the cobblestone streets, and there are many churches, cafes, and antique stores for you to see. You will visit the famous crafts fair in San Telmo in the morning, where there is a plethora of stalls and shops selling antiques and other interesting items in addition to all the dancing and music that engulfs the fair.

Next, you will continue your cultural experience at the famous Mataderos Fair, centered in the traditional gaucho (cowboy) neighborhood of Buenos Aires. The fair, started 20 years ago and also containing a rich culture of music, food, and dance, is on the location of the old Buenos Aires slaughterhouse. Tour the market and the Museo de Corrales Creole, which displays numerous items and objects that allow you to learn how the gaucho culture developed and the important role that livestock plays in the lives of the Argentinian people. You will also enjoy a delicious lunch (included in the tour) of typical Argentine cuisine. Sample dishes like tamales (boiled beef with spices inside a corn husk), husk tamale (similar to a tamale, but with corn and cheese instead of beef), locro (typical Argentine stew) and empanadas. Relax with a glass of local wine as you savor your meal.

After lunch, you will have the opportunity to roam the fair in search of items that interest you. They have a multitude of things for sale, including crafts, candy, instruments, records, clothes, and other accessories. Visit the famous Bar Oviedo, a historic and popular location during the Sunday fair. The bar used to be a meeting point for the old slaughterhouse workers after a long day of work, back when it was just a small grocery store in the early 1900's, but since then it has been developed into the historic bar it is today. It is also home to one of the oldest billiard tables in Buenos Aires, dating to 1920.

After all of this excitement, you will see the famous "ring races" where the gaucho cowboys ride their horses in a cultural presentation. You will also have a nice snack of mate with pastries before heading back from the fair. This tour will certainly open your eyes to the rich culture of the Buenos Aires people. Do as the Argentinians do and spend a lovely day at the local fairs.
