Tour Details

Carved from a Cypress Swamp by the Rev. John Drayton in the early 19th century, Magnolia Gardens is considered one of the most beautiful romantic gardens in the world. As you stroll with your guide through her lush pathways these unique gardens will truly enchant you. After touring the gardens board the Nature Train which will take you into part of the Audubon Swamp Garden, home to scores of water loving creatures, and past the newly restored Slave cabins which interpret African American life on the plantation. You may even see an alligator and will have the opportunity to view the abundant bird population of the lowcountry. To complete your plantation experience tour Magnolia's unique Plantation House.

OLD SLAVE MART MUSEUM The complex once known as Ryan's Mart held perhaps the most famous slave market in the south owned and run by a city alderman and former sheriff. The Old Slave Mart is the only remaining structure once used as a slave auction gallery. Located on one of Charleston's original cobblestoned streets, the building was constructed in 1856 and used as a slave trading shed for eight years after the city required trading to be done indoors. The museum gives a detailed history of the trans-Atlantic and domestic slave trade which helped to strengthen Charleston's financial and political networks within the state.
