Tour Details

The Cycle Soweto tour is the perfect excursion if you’re looking for something unique and exciting during your South African vacation. Traveling via bike, you will experience the culture of Soweto while discovering the secrets of Soweto’s tragic past. This Johannesburg tour will allow you to understand what makes it the society it is today while learning about its dramatic history.

Your tour will start with pick up from your hotel, and a pre-cycle orientation to get you ready to ride. Then hop on your bike to discover the color, energy, and history of vibrant Soweto during this Johannesburg bike tour. As you ride along, your local guide will take you through the history of Soweto and into current developments and life today. With locals speaking all of the 11 official languages of South Africa, see if you can pick up a few local phrases to greet people while riding through the streets.

Your first stop is a look-out point that takes in Orlando West and East. View the surroundings of the township, including the home grounds of the famous soccer team, the Orlando Pirates. From there, your next stop is Mzimhlophe Men’s Hostel, a former migrant workers’ hostel. You’ll learn how men from around the country moved to Johannesburg and its townships to work in the gold mines, and the conditions they lived in, as well as how this area has now transformed to become a Soweto community today. In this area, many locals still practice traditional African customs, and you’ll learn all about their beliefs and traditions.

Your Soweto tour then continues via Meadowlands to the memorial site of Hector Pieterson, the 12 year old student who was tragically killed while protesting in 1976, which commemorates the uprisings on 16 June 1976 when hundreds of children and youths lost their lives while protesting the Apartheid education system. From there, continue on to Vilakazi Street, where you will stop at Nelson Mandela’s former home, and the home of Arch Bishop Desmond Tutu, to learn more about these icons’ contributions to a free and democratic South Africa. You'll spend a total of about 2 hours exploring this amazing South African city by bike.

See the important sights which shaped South Africa on this historic Johannesburg bike tour. Hop on two wheels to explore the streets of the colorful region that more than three million people call home.
